bild: arrow2 The "Kista Open Academy" project
Kista Open Academy is an Equal project, granted by the Swedish ESF council. The project is started by Kista borough (Stockholm) which also acts as a coordinator for a partnership built with municipalities, universities, organisations and companies. The partnership consists of 24 partners, not just swedish but finnish and norwegians as well.

The total budget of the project is 13 million swedish crowns (that is about €1.5 million).

Kista Open Academy realizes the concept of the open university in Sweden. Its overriding goal is to counteract social, economic and ethnic segregation by providing qualified education adapted to the needs and interests of disadvantaged groups. Implementation of the project is founded on flexible education systems, collaboration with universities, public and private education, the experience of the Popular Adult Education organisations and modern information technology.

The project ... five development areas; Rules, Learning Center, Course Development, "Children and Youth" and "Matching and Starting your own business". To spread the result of the project and to develop and widen the network there is a sicth area called "New Nodes".

Kista open Academy has formed transnational partnerships with two Equal projects in England, the "Learning Kitchen" in Black Country and the "Asylum Seekers" in London and, in Italy, "Fenice". Through these partnerships we can learn from other countries experiencies and, at the same time, spread and deveop our experiencies. Portugal and Final are also parts of the transnational network.

This has proved to be wrong.

bild: arrow2 In short, the goal of Kista Open Academy is to offer:
The open university shall be open to all who can and wish to study, irrespective of formal qualifications and without restriction by the student grants system.

The open university has no geographical boundaries. We build on experience and collaboration with the United Kingdom (Open University), Finland (Turku Open University) and Norway (Midt i Norden network) but also form ties with universities in the countries that many of Sweden’s new citizens come from.

The open university is created to facilitate lifelong learning based on the needs of the individual, but also to satisfy the needs of ethnic minorities, asylum seekers, and inhabitants of rural areas and the islands, as well as a way to counteract unemployment, discrimination and segregation.

The open university will develop and disseminate methods to strengthen young peoples’ network as a means to "empowerment".

The open university will give children and young people the opportunity at an early stage to become interested in higher education – not least within the area of natural sciences.

The open university is a network organisation with a fixed administration but no school of its own, a broad network of educators at universities as well as other teachers at different levels. These are matched against each other in close co-operation. Local teaching centres provide the tangible base in the towns, cities, and rural areas, and form networks with each other and with their students by the use of modern communication technology.

The open university also contributes to stimulating and developing interactions between higher education and society–the third goal–and to improving the employability of individuals and their mobility in the labour market.
