 ACCOMPLISHMENT
Summarizing description of the Kista Open Academy project
Purpose with the project
Kista Open Academy is an Equal project which has been approved by the Swedish ESF Council. The purpose with the project
is to realize the concept of the open university in Sweden Its overriding goal is to counteract social,
economic and ethnic segregation by providing qualified education adapted to the needs and interests of disadvantaged
groups. Implementation of the project is founded on flexible education systems, collaboration with universities,
public and private education, the experience of the Popular Adult Education organisations and modern information technology.
Aims
The different aims will be achieved by:
- creating enthusiasm for education among new groups in the local society
- creating a system of education applicable in both rich and poorly populated areas
- combining different levels of education, i.e. education for adults parallell with university studies
- being able to study in several different languages
- developping individual study plans, containing courses from different providers
- guaranteing jobs for the more job-oriented courses
- developping the form and substance of popular education by adding a university dimension to it
- creating virtual support structures in order to facilitate the process of starting-on-your-own for adults
- raising the interest for higher education among children and adolescents from families where no such education exists.
Long term aims
The Kista Open Academy project will, by performing the pilot activities and by studying the results within the project, lead
to spreading of more advanced open courses on different levels to new target groups.
Through the nordic cooperation, the transnational network and the strong support that Kista Open Academy has from Stockholm
City´s central administration, together with the network within Sweden and in the Baltic Sea area, development and
spreading projects easily be created for example in R&D, 6:th frame or in the Inter regional programs.
Kista Open Academy may become an important scadinavian node in an all european network around distance education on demand in
swedish, english and other languages all around the Baltic Sea area.
Target group
Unemployed adults, where many are immigrants, working people with long education or immigrants who aren´'t able to use
their education from another country. The project should also stimulate children in school and youths in high school to higher education.

Totalt: 13.000.000 SEK 1.444.444 EUR
National budget: 8.785.700 SEK 976.189 EUR
Transnational budget: 4.214.300 SEK 468.255 EUR, swedish part, all TCA tills.
(The exchange course for EUR varies, but has preliminary been calculated as 9 SEK for 1 EUR)
